Moving from Zurich to Italy – Gotthard, ZTL and Residenza
Italy jobs from Zurich rarely copy a Stuttgart run. Households move to Lake Como, to Milan for work, or back to family in Lombardy and Piedmont; some continue to Rome. Koray Umzug handles planning, packing, customs papers, transport and assembly – and plans narrow lanes, courtyards without a lorry and limited-traffic zones (ZTL) from the first survey.
Chiasso is close; the paperwork is not lighter. Removal goods still need an inventory and Swiss deregistration or the consignment stops, even when Como looks like a short hop. Other countries sit under International relocation from Zurich.
Work through deregistration in Switzerland and the checklist for moving abroad before loading. End-of-tenancy cleaning can run on move-out day. If the Italian lease starts later, store furniture in Zurich until the Comune or the notary date is clear.
In Milan’s Navigli, Como’s lanes or Turin’s centre a furniture lorry does not reach the bell. A municipal ZTL permit and a carry from the nearest legal stop are common. We settle that before the quote, not when the driver faces a camera.
Transport is covered under our public-liability and goods-in-transit insurance; for storage we also recommend checking your household or stored-goods insurance.
Typical routes from Zurich
Como is ca. 220 km, usually via Gotthard or San Bernardino depending on season and closures. Many deliveries end in lakeside flats with steep drives and no lift. Milan is ca. 280 km; private moves mix with job starts, and addresses often sit inside ZTL sectors.
Turin is ca. 410 km south-west – another motorway, another city logic, often a period building with a porter and a tight courtyard. Rome is ca. 880 km: more driving, different delivery windows, and in historic districts almost always a ZTL permit plus carrying. We do not assume a Zurich-Seefeld loading bay.
Customs: leaving Switzerland
Household goods must be declared when they leave Switzerland. You need an inventory list and a deregistration confirmation from your municipality.
Current guidance is published by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS/BAZG): www.bazg.admin.ch.
Customs: entering Italy
Italy uses the same EU logic for transfer-of-residence goods: personal items used for at least six months can enter without duty or VAT if you lived outside the EU for twelve months and the goods arrive within twelve months of the move. A brand-new kitchen from the studio, stock for a shop or undocumented buys do not sit in that category.
The customs agency (ADM) expects the inventory, Swiss deregistration and proof of the new address. Residenza at the Comune is a different counter from customs – both must be right, neither replaces the other. Check current forms and conditions with customs.
Official information from the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli: www.adm.gov.it.
Residenza, narrow streets and ZTL
Residenza is registered at the Comune. Files and waiting times differ between Milan, a lakeside Comune and Rome. Without it, doctors, schools and often the electricity contract stall. We time goods and arrival; the counter visit remains yours.
Many Italian centres are zona a traffico limitato. The removal lorry may need a municipal transit permit, or cameras and bollards keep it outside. Cobblestone lanes may only take a smaller vehicle or pure carrying. That belongs in the quote, not at the kerb.
Clear the car separately
In Italy a car is its own customs and registration case, not a carton on the inventory. Import and immatricolazione follow other rules than a sofa. Check current forms and conditions with customs.

How it runs with Koray Umzug
Survey in Zurich with the Italian destination in mind – floor, ZTL, carry distance. Then a fixed-price quote. Packing and dismantling, customs papers, transport over the Alps, assembly at destination. Swiss end-of-tenancy cleaning and storage are add-ons when move-out and Italian move-in are not the same day.
ZTL and transit
Limited-traffic zones checked before the run, including a possible permit from the Comune.
Inventory for the Dogane
Used household goods separated from new purchases, matching transfer-of-residence import.
Narrow streets and courtyards
Plan B for carrying and a smaller vehicle when the furniture lorry cannot reach the door.
Assembly after the Alpine run
Furniture taken apart in Zurich and rebuilt in Milan, Como, Turin or Rome.
Storage until Residenza
Zurich storage if the Italian lease or notary date sits later than move-out.

FAQ about Moving to Italy
Which documents does a move to Italy need?
Inventory and deregistration to leave Switzerland, plus proof of the new address for import. Residenza at the Comune follows after arrival. Check current forms and conditions with customs.
Is Como quicker than Rome?
Como is closer; ZTL and carrying can still stretch the day. Rome needs more driving. We confirm a window after the survey, not as a catalogue number.
Do I pay Italian duty on used household goods?
Transfer-of-residence goods can stay free under the EU conditions. New items, undocumented buys and goods for sale often fall out. The Dogane decides, not the moving company.
Can the Zurich flat be cleaned while I am already in Milan?
Yes. End-of-tenancy cleaning of the old flat can sit on move-out day. We agree access and handover so you do not fly back from Italy.
What if the Como flat is only free in six weeks?
Storing furniture in Zurich covers the wait. The run to Italy starts from storage once the keys and, if needed, the ZTL permit are in place.
