Moving from Zurich to Austria – Alpine route, Meldezettel, one plan
For many Zurich households Austria is the nearest EU country, not an overseas project. Typical jobs: Vorarlberg for work in Bregenz or Dornbirn, a clinic or university start in Innsbruck, a cultural or public-sector role in Vienna. Koray Umzug still runs survey, packing, customs papers, transport and assembly – but the geography is Alpine: Arlberg, Inn valley, Vienna basin, not the north motorway.
Because Bregenz feels close, papers get skipped. The border at St. Margrethen is short; customs is not. Removal goods need an inventory and deregistration or the lorry waits. The umbrella page is International relocation from Zurich.
Complete deregistration in Switzerland and the checklist for moving abroad before loading. End-of-tenancy cleaning can run on move-out day. If Innsbruck or Vienna is not ready, store furniture in Zurich until the Austrian lease starts.
Innsbruck’s old town and Salzburg’s lanes rarely take a 40-tonne truck at the door. We plan a parking ban with the municipality or Magistrat, carrying over cobbles, and winter dates when the Inn valley motorway shapes the calendar – not a longer city hop through Winterthur.
Transport is covered under our public-liability and goods-in-transit insurance; for storage we also recommend checking your household or stored-goods insurance.
Typical routes from Zurich
Bregenz and the rest of Vorarlberg are ca. 120 km – the most common short run, still with a full inventory. Distance does not replace a declaration.
Innsbruck is ca. 280 km east, usually via Arlberg or the lower Inn valley; period buildings in Wilten often have no lift. Salzburg is ca. 450 km; the old town is unsuitable for furniture lorries, so delivery ends at a permitted bay. Vienna is ca. 770 km – Magistrat, different traffic rules, and often a courtyard with no through-drive for the full set.
Customs: leaving Switzerland
Household goods must be declared when they leave Switzerland. You need an inventory list and a deregistration confirmation from your municipality.
Current guidance is published by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS/BAZG): www.bazg.admin.ch.
Customs: entering Austria
Austria applies the EU transfer-of-residence rule: used personal goods can enter without duty or VAT if they have been used for six months, you lived outside the EU for twelve months, and they arrive within twelve months of the move. Company tools, last week’s furniture-store delivery or goods on consignment do not belong on that list.
Besides inventory and Swiss deregistration, import needs proof of the Austrian address. The Meldezettel and customs are different offices. Check current forms and conditions with customs.
Official information from the Ministry of Finance: www.bmf.gv.at.
Meldezettel and parking bans
Austria requires registration within three days of moving in – tighter than Germany. The Meldezettel goes through the municipality or Magistrat. A Friday arrival and a Tuesday counter visit already misses the deadline. Time the delivery so registration sits in the same calendar days.
We apply for the parking ban with the Gemeinde or Magistrat. Vienna districts differ; Innsbruck and Salzburg old towns are strict. Signs must be up before the lorry arrives.
Treat the car separately
A car does not ride on the same list as crockery and wardrobes. Import and registration in Austria are their own customs and authority path. We do not quietly add the car to the household load. Check current forms and conditions with customs.

How it runs with Koray Umzug
Survey of the Zurich home, then a fixed-price quote with volume and access at the Austrian destination. Packing and dismantling on move-out day, customs papers with the inventory, transport on the chosen Alpine route, assembly in Bregenz, Innsbruck, Salzburg or Vienna. Cleaning and storage are add-ons when Swiss move-out and Austrian move-in are not the same day.
Short and long Alpine runs
From Vorarlberg to Vienna: the same inventory duty, different distance and loading bays.
Meldezettel timing
Arrival planned so the three-day legal window does not fall on a weekend without a counter.
Parking ban with municipality or Magistrat
Permit at destination before the lorry stops in an old-town lane without approval.
Rebuild in tight period buildings
Wardrobes and beds taken apart in Zurich and rebuilt in Innsbruck or Vienna, stairs included.
Storage bridge in Switzerland
If the Austrian lease starts later, the goods stay in Zurich until the keys exist.

FAQ about Moving to Austria
Which documents does a move to Austria need?
Inventory and deregistration to leave Switzerland, plus proof of the new address for import. You complete the Meldezettel after arrival at the municipality or Magistrat. Check current forms and conditions with customs.
Is Bregenz faster than Vienna?
The distance is shorter; the customs logic is the same. A small volume to Vorarlberg is usually delivered sooner than a full house to Vienna – we only quote a window after the survey.
Do I pay Austrian duty or VAT on used household goods?
Transfer-of-residence goods can stay free under the EU conditions. Newly bought furniture, undocumented items and goods for resale are often dutiable. The customs post decides, not the crew.
Who cleans the Zurich flat if I am already in Innsbruck?
On request, end-of-tenancy cleaning of the old flat by our cleaning team, tied to move-out. You do not need to travel back if access and handover are organised.
Can furniture wait until the Vienna flat is free?
Yes. Storing furniture in Zurich covers the gap between Swiss notice and the Austrian lease. The run to Vienna then starts from storage.
