Moving from Zurich to Germany – border, papers and one crew

A move from Zurich to Germany is rarely just a longer van ride. Most bookings follow a new job in Baden-Württemberg or Bavaria, a family reunion, or retirement closer to children. Koray Umzug covers the household side: planning, packing, the inventory for customs, transport and assembly in the new flat. You keep one coordinator instead of calling a haulier, packers and a destination crew separately.

The Swiss–German border is the real difference. Removal goods must be declared; without an inventory and a deregistration certificate the truck waits, even when Stuttgart is closer than Geneva. That is why we treat Germany as its own job. For other countries, start at International relocation from Zurich.

Finish Swiss admin before loading day. Use deregistration in Switzerland and the checklist for moving abroad. End-of-tenancy cleaning can sit on the same day as the load. If the German keys come later, we can store furniture in Zurich until the lease starts.

German destinations vary: a walk-up in Munich or Frankfurt, a terraced house near Stuttgart, a courtyard in Berlin with no lorry access. Parking bans go through the Ordnungsamt, not the same desk as in Switzerland, so the lift and the loading bay have to be booked before the truck leaves Zurich.

Transport is covered under our public-liability and goods-in-transit insurance; for storage we also recommend checking your household or stored-goods insurance.

Typical routes from Zurich

Stuttgart is ca. 230 km via Schaffhausen or the A81 – often a job change into the region, with one-way streets in the centre. Munich is ca. 310 km via Lindau or Memmingen. Period buildings in Schwabing or Maxvorstadt usually need a furniture lift planned before loading, not improvised at the kerb.

Frankfurt is ca. 420 km north; private moves and office furniture mix more often because a start date in banking or consulting sets the calendar. Berlin is ca. 850 km, the longest of the four standard runs: more motorway, a different rest pattern, and frequently a rear courtyard with no lorry entrance. We plan Zurich loading and German delivery as one chain.

Customs: leaving Switzerland

Household goods must be declared when they leave Switzerland. You need an inventory list and a deregistration confirmation from your municipality.

Current guidance is published by the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS/BAZG): www.bazg.admin.ch.

Customs: entering Germany

EU transfer-of-residence rules can let used personal goods enter without customs duty or VAT if they have been used for at least six months, you have lived outside the EU for at least twelve months, and the goods arrive within twelve months of the move. Brand-new purchases, stock and goods for resale do not qualify.

German customs expect the inventory, Swiss deregistration and proof of the new address – a lease or a landlord confirmation. Forms change. We help complete the list; we do not replace the customs office. Check current forms and conditions with customs.

Official information: www.zoll.de.

Registration and parking bans in Germany

You must register at the Einwohnermeldeamt within 14 days of moving in. Without that registration, tax ID, broadcasting fee and often the electricity contract stall. That visit is yours, not part of the truck – but the move date should not dump you into a long storage gap.

At destination we apply for the parking ban with the local Ordnungsamt. Lead times differ by city; Munich and Frankfurt centres need more notice than a new suburb. Without a bay the lorry sits in residents’ no-stopping – then everything is carried, not loaded.

Cars are a separate case

A car is not household goods like a sofa. Import, duty and later registration at the vehicle office are a separate process. We do not treat the car as a silent add-on to the furniture load. Check current forms and conditions with customs.

How it runs with Koray Umzug

Survey of the Zurich home – on site or by video – covering volume, floor, lift and special pieces. Then a fixed-price quote, not hourly work at the border. On moving day: packing as booked, dismantling, customs papers with the inventory, transport into the German flat, assembly if booked. Storage in Switzerland and end-of-tenancy cleaning are options, not a forced bundle.

Inventory for German customs

Room list of used household goods, separate from new purchases – the basis for duty-free transfer-of-residence.

Parking ban at destination

Application with the Ordnungsamt in Stuttgart, Munich, Frankfurt or Berlin, matched to the street.

Packing for the motorway

Cartons, blankets and edge protection so the longer German run is not a stress test for furniture.

Assembly in the new flat

Beds, wardrobes and kitchen parts rebuilt, including walk-up buildings without a lift.

Storage in Zurich

If the German lease starts later than the Swiss move-out, the goods wait with us until the keys exist.

FAQ about Moving to Germany

Which papers do I need to move to Germany?

Inventory and municipal deregistration to leave Switzerland, plus proof of the new address for German entry. Check current forms and conditions with customs – we prepare the list, we do not replace the authority.

How long does a Zurich–Germany move take?

It depends on volume, city and customs clearance – Stuttgart or Munich is shorter than Berlin, a full house longer than a two-room flat. We do not publish a calendar day without a survey. The quote includes a realistic window.

Do I pay German duty or VAT on my household goods?

Used transfer-of-residence goods can stay duty- and VAT-free under the EU conditions. New items, undocumented last-minute buys or goods for sale often fall outside. Customs decides, not the moving company.

Do you clean the Zurich flat after loading?

Yes, on request. End-of-tenancy cleaning of the old flat can run on the move-out day, with a Swiss-standard handover guarantee, while the goods are already heading to Germany.

Can the goods wait until the German flat is ready?

Yes. Storing furniture in Zurich covers the gap when Swiss notice and the German lease do not line up. The run to Germany then starts from storage, not from an emptied flat.
